This journal has moved

Hello everyone.

I decided to merge my personal and workshop journals, since I rarely use my personal journal anyway, and I don't feel like keeping two.

Some people watch both of these journals, but some other have only this journal friended. Feel free then to friend my other journal if you still want to see my workshop posts. It is mostly what is gonna be there anyway. The journal is medvssa

See you around!

Dinning table III - cracks

Today I started sanding the "wood paste" I made according to hardware store clerck... I should have tried this before going on crack filling spree. The paste has hardened and darkened a lot. I have to sand it off with a harsh sandpaper in the machine, and insisting a lot, it is gummy and difficult to sand off, and at some points the filling comes out of the thin cracks in a thin strip when sanding the rest! argh. I am then losing my time and losing wood to top it off. So now it is gonna take a lot of time to sand this crap off and fill the holes again with something that works, and then sand again. This is how the glue+sawdust mix has hardened:

When sanded, if it doesn't peel off, it looks like this, quite dark, but I hope not as noticeable once the surface is varnished, therefore darkened. Still, it is way too dark I think:

I have then tried to fill the cracks with the quality wood paste I have, it was much easier to fill the cracks without making a mess all around:

And when sanded (and it sands easily off and nice, I did it by hand in 10 seconds), it is of course too light, because this paste is light oak. I am gonna go and get cherry wood this weekend:

Live and learn, I guess.

Dinning table II

Last weekend Pim helped me sanding the rest of the table top. He did most of the work. After removing all of the varnish, he sanded it with a finer grit and no vacuum cleaner, and I picked up as much of the sawdust as possible. Then I mixed it with white glue and filled in cracks. I am still not finished doing this.

Today I've been working on the table all day. My hips hurt so much I can barely walk >_< I just took an anti-infflamatory and let's hope it works.

First I sanded the edges of the table top board. That wasn't much work.
Then I decided I had to do something to the legs. After that I decided I had to do something to the extension boards that are under the table top. I want to finish the table soon.

The legs are turned, massive, some sort of hardwood. They have been dyed mahogany and they were in quite bad condition, old layers of... wax? wasted at the corners, where the protective layer and the dye has worn off.
I started by removing as much as I could of the supposed wax. I used a product -some sort of solvent- to remove wax, I also used it to remove the wax on the vanity, and it worked much better for that. I don't really know what was on these legs, perhaps some old varnish. So I rubbed them with this product and steel wool.

A lot of gunk came out, but I didn't spend three days working at it, so everything didn't come out. I stopped when I thought it was decent, and then washed the legs with "natural" soap, taking care not to soak them too much. I also rubbed and washed the sides, under the boards, but I think these have a more decent varnish.

Sort of clean, and dry.

Then I dyed them with a mix made with walnut powder and mahogany dye. I mixed this dye some time ago, to dye 4 "torus" shaped pieces of light wood to put under the table, a shape much like the lower turn of the legs, since it is a little too low for our chairs. I matched them to the colour of the legs, so I used this dye again.

Better?

Then I waxed and polished them. I couldn't achieve super shine, but they do look decent and much better.

On to the boards... those were a big mess. Except a thin rail on the edges, they were some sort of raw pine timber. Splintery, dirty, full of holes and cracks. One big, big crack.

First I thought I am gonna dye them a little and let them be.

But they are so rough they would even catch on a table cloth if we use the table with extensions. Not gonna happen soon, not gonna happen often, but if you do something, better do it a little better than a little worse. So I filled the holes and the cracks with wood paste, sanded all of it a little bit, dyed again, and gave a layer of varnish. Also to the edges. Now I feel a little bit better about the underboards :P

It is still not dry.

Now I am off to take a warm, warm shower. Then I hope I still have enough energy left to clean up the mess, but I do not want to fuck up my hips even more, so we will see.

More t-shirt painting.

I finished two more t-shirts.

Little bird on branch.

Orchid.

The model.

I have to let them dry completely, take better pictures (difficult with the little light there is around here for the last week) and put them on Etsy. I want to sell them fairly cheap.
I have another t-shirt, grey, to paint. It is gonna be more birds.

My wrist appears completely healed already.

Poppies

I needed some instant gratification. To start something and finish it.

Inspired by the poppies I see these days in a train station on my way to work.
Hand painted poppies over light green t-shirt. It is a 6-7 year old t-shirt, I'll put it on Etsy soon. I have some other t-shirts to paint.

I hurted my hips again while sanding the table yesterday, so Pim is gonna have to finish the sanding...
And I just burned my wrist with boiling water while cooking. Oh joy.

Dinning table

I've started working on the dining table again. I don't think I ever posted here about it? We started to sand it some months ago, the varnish was quite hard and difficult to sand off. I didn't want to use a varnish remover.

Today I sanded the rest of varnish from one third of the table (I'm dividing it in three parts to work on for three days) with a harsh grit, and then with a finer grit and no vacuum cleaner attached, as to collect some saw(?)dust to mix with white wood glue to fill in cracks later on. This was a tip from the clerk at the hardware store.

On a side note, the paid account for this journal expired some time ago (I still don't know why the automatic payment didn't work) and today I went to renew it for a year, I did... while I was logged in with my innershelter account :( stupid, stupid me. I've logged a help ticket and I hope this can be solved, I cannot afford to pay for another account, and for some reason this went back to an account with ads :/ And I can make absolutely no use of the benefits of a paid account in innershelter, it is completely useless.
I am having a terrible day, I shouldn't do anything remotely important when I'm like this.

Update: I got a refund!! :) now I have to remember tomorrow and purchase the subscription on this account.

Weighing of the heart - setting

I've been working on this yesterday and today. Yesterday I soldered the rings and finished soldering the "walls" which still had some holes.
Today I saw(ed?) one of the frames out, filed, sanded, darkened (with flame) polished a bit with pumice stone, and tried to set the enamel in (I also put some glue as a reinforcement). This is the first time I attempt a bezel setting, and it has been many years since I've done any jewellery, as is apparent in the results :P

I think the sheet was maybe too high, and maybe too thick. Cannot get it down more than this (also afraid to break the enamel, which btw I chipped a little bit when insering the enamel...). Maybe I should file it a little bit? Hm, I have no clue.

This is the state of things at the moment. A bit blurry.

Sort of antiqued finish

The ring seems a bit crooked, I didn't see that until I saw the pics.

The mark in the enamel is in the copper o_O I didn't realize before enamelling. WONKY setting.

There you can see the chip, it is only visible at an angle.
Ugh, the setting is terrible xD

Not too happy wiht this, obviously.

1877 corset XI

Crappy Prym setter...

Today I've been setting grommets (the most annoying part, especially since I don't have an awl...) because I wanted to try the corset before finishing to see if I have to make adjustments. I do..

I set the busk too low, I think. The back digs in a bit, and the front bulges out too much, so the pattern should be modified here. The breast is a little bit tight. For this corset I think I'll just take it in a little. It is a bit too long when I sit, so I will have to cut it at bit at the front...
It still gives the right shape, so it will do for undergarment. But I want to repeat it, because I have learnt a lot of things from this one, and I think I can make it a lot better. I am thinking a double layer, since at least this coutil is quite thin (and I washed it). But I don't know if the wrinkles are due to that, or due that I didn't cut with them on grain to the waist, or any other reason.

Here I am pulling it in a bit.

There is supposed to be a hook and eye there at the top. And the edges are uneven...

I didn't set the top three grommets since they will go over the lace.
And I think I made the back a little too high, seems a bit out of proportion.

Yesterday I did a few things differently on the second half of the corset. I didn't zig-zag the edges of the seam allowances to reduce bulk. Where there where two layers of seam allowances that had to be graded, I cut the underneath layer shorter than the top, so that they don't interfere when inserting the bones.

Right now, I think I am a bit tired of this sewing project. It is surprising for how many days it mantained me engaged, though. I wanted to finish it this weekend, but I think I will let it rest for a while and work in another (non sewing) project. But I am not allowed to work in another sewing project until I finish this one! I have decided (it was about time, really) that I won't start any new projects until I finish a few ones, because I have dozens of them started... I am a mess.

I feel a bit worse of my sickness today, so I think I am gonna rest for the rest of the day (apart from cleaning up my mess and trying to cut down a little on the huge pile of ironing)

1877 corset X

Still home on sick leave. I worked a little on the corset, but nothing too exciting. Stitching the other half boning channels. Previous half was a little crappy, so I tried to find a way to make the lines straighter and in the right place. First I tried tape, I hated it.
Then I took the edge stitcher and saw that it is perfect as a guide:

There are other things I want to write down, but I am too tired right now, maybe tomorrow...

1877 corset IX

I am home on sick leave. Couldn't do much because I fall asleep (and I must, too ;P)

Today I basted the rest of the boning casings (for one half of the corset) ironed them to adapt to the curves, and stitched. My stitching is not straight. I think I could use one of those quilting guides because I find it difficult to keep the distance even, with no guide whatsoever.

Ironed around cup.

This is how I put the waist tape. I forgot about it when I made the first bone channels, so I had to stitch over them to attach the tape. It is hold in place by the bone casing stitching.

Bones inserted.

Flossing, I am following the motif from the fashion plate.
I started flossing at the table, and it was ok. Then I switched to the sofa, and it went downhill. Very downhill. I am quite bad at embroidery and I get tired (and worse) very fast.
I am gonna have to remove it (even if it goes under the lace and it is difficult to see, it is so bad I don't want it there. I don't want to show it either.
I used cotton embroidery floss, what I had at hand. I dyed it with tea+camomile (it was white). I don't think I have enough to repeat everything. I'll go to the shop tomorrow and possibly get it cream colored already. And maybe green too (I have green but it isn't the exact shade of green of the ribbon, and it is perle, I think, one strand in any case)

Then I tried bees. I don't know if I am gona use bees, as they are not in the plate. I started with the one on the right, then got a little better, then a little better. Still not very nice though.

And yeah I hand-bound the top edge. I used the same tape I used for the waist tape (but dyed)
1877 corset VIII

Today I ripped the boning casing I sew over the weekend, because it was 3 cm wide and too narrow. Today I tried 3.5 cm which worked very well, so I ironed the rest of the strips at 3.5 cm. I am now basting more strips, but running out of time already, so I don't know if I will have time to do much more.

With the bones in

Inside

Bias strips

The dye took a more pink color, I like the subtle difference, it is more noticeable in the pictures (my camera amplifies magenta tones) Did I mention that after dyeing with camomile, the fabric smells great when I iron it? hehee.
Sewing closet

This weekend hasn't been productive at all, I had other things to do. Now while I'm boiling some rice I thought I would post about the sewing closet, that I cleaned up Saturday. I always have such a mess there...
I claimed this closet, which is just a door to the dinning room, for fabric and sewing stuff the moment I saw it ;P At the moment it seemed pretty big, but I am already running out of space, and I don't think I have all that much fabric...

I had the fabric in big cardboard boxes. Everytime I pulled a box out I broke it a little bit, not to mention how difficult it is to pull fabric from the bottom without messing up everything else... So I have taken it all out and piled it on the shelf. This way it is less protected from dust and light. Or cats, I have to remember to close the door. But I'll see if it is more useful like this. I've been bringing tea boxes from work, they have little divisions inside and I find them useful to store thread, ribbon, notions and stuff.

This is my meagre fabric stash ;P a good deal, especially the pile on the left, is fabric people gave to me. Still, feels like I have spent a fortune in fabric... and I don't see it. Must be that silk is thin.
And well, a lot of it is already in unfinished projects... those live in separate bags into a box under the stash...

I worked a little bit on the boning channels of the corset this weekend, well, one boning channel, but I made it too small so I have to rip it and sew it again...

Coutil dyeing (1877 corset VII)

Today I dyed the boning channels

Drying flat to keep the pigment from migrating to the edges. I will hang them when it is only damp.

To keep a bit of track. I made a strong tea of 2 bags of yellow label tea and 4 of camomile. This didn't seem enough so I made another tea with one yellow label tea bag and 3 more camomile bags. Level of water in my container as shows in the pic (3, 4 liters of water?)

1877 corset VI

Saturday and Sunday I basted and stitched the panels togheter. I still have to stitch over it a second time. I also stitched besides the busk for the bones that go there, and cut a couple to insert.
Today I cut the bias strips for the boning channels. I still have to dye these.
I am having pretty bad health these last days and because of this I am not being very productive or comunicative. I went to the swimming pool Sunday with my boyfriend and want to keep up with it to see if it will alleviate the pain.

In progress

Cut with scissors

Sanded with nail file

Bias strips

1877 corset V

Today I worked the morning shift, so I worked a little in the corset this afternoon.

Today I Inserted the studded side of the busk, and finished the back panels.
I marked and made the "holes" (not holes actually, but separated the fibers with an awl -a couple of them since I don't have a decent one- not to break the fibers and keep the strenght), inserted the studs into the holes and sew around the busk. No incident :)

I took two stripes of coutil (cross-grain) and placed them at the center, actually, slightly off center to grade the bulk, of the back pieces (which I cout double, with folded fabric) I stitched along the middle to keep neatly in place and ironed.

Then I marked where the seams should be to accomodate the boning and the grommets:

Stitched...

And that is it, here the bones are in, the grommets on top just for reference:

Now I'm starting to baste the panels togheter.... this is going to take forever. I suck at it, and no matter how careful I am, my sewing allowances are never perfect to use as a guide...

Coutil dyeing (1877 corset IV)

Today I ironed out the pieces after dyeing them on Saturday:

I first dyed them in a light tea bath, but the color was a bit too dirty. So I gave them a second bath in a strong chamomile tea. The result is a bit more yellow and exactly what I was looking for. I don't know if this dye is more or less permanent though... but I don't care much. The result is not entirely uniform, which is gonna make it look like an antique :) I like the contrast with the white lace, but I am still considering dyeing it veeery lightly so that it is not nuclear white. The fabric underneath is the white coutil for reference.

Continued 12:35

I've inserted half of the busk. After three immersions in water and air drying, the busk presented no rust. I decided to insert it leaving this first coutil layer inside, since it is a one layer corset, to give more body.

I worked with the wheel most of the time. I don't trust myself with the treadle that much yet.

Sewing both pieces togheter, leaving spaces for the eyes, backstitching to secure. With this machine I can backstitch into the same hole! I used the 306K machine for the zig-zag.
I sew a second time over the same seam with a smaller stitch, but then it didn't look so nice anymore ;P

Layers are graded to avoid bulk.

Singer 306K

For those of you that are not yet running away screaming from my sewing machine posts ;P yet another one.

Yesterday we went to pick up the other sewing machine I won on Ebay last week (€21.55) It is an electric 306K (I thought it was a 301 which has the same body, there isn't much information online about the 306) from the 50's. This one was dirtier. I would need to clean it with kerosene, but I don't have or know where to find it here. So far I have cleaned the lint and oiled it and it works fine. It is fast, though. And as is usual with these older machines, there is a slight delay when you give power or stop giving it... It has 6 cams and makes a few nice stitches: zig-zag, multiple zig-zag, arrow heads, checkers, hidden stitch and festoons. I am not sure about the names of the stitches, I know them in Spanish and the manual is in French...
It doesn't have a pedal but a knee control thingie, which is weird to me. It came in a huge suitcase, lined in some sort of fake snakeskin. I can barely lift it, Pim has to help me. And in the manual they say it is light because the head is aluminum!

It is very strong and makes a perfect stitch :)

Nice thing is that it has the same shank than my other Singer, so I can use the feet in both machines. This one came with presser foot, universal presser foot (for zig-zag etc) left and right (separated) zipper foot, button foot, buttonhole foot, hemmer and "bourdon" (very close zigzag) foot. It has three bobbins and also a double needle.

Mino is as intimidated by the knee control thing as me.

The light still works!

Some stitches.

There is so little light here lately that the pictures suck...

1877 corset III

Today I continued with the corset. I made a mock-up with the strong "Bull Denim" I ordered from Vena Cava. I took the pattern as is and only added what I already added on the previous mock-up to the hips. I also added the higher back. Basically what I altered from the previous pattern is to leave the chest as is (bigger that on the previous mock-up then)
I used eyelet tape for the laces and hook and eye tape for the front opening, I boned the back next to the laces and one of the side seams, but still the front wrinkled too much, so I sew the already inserted busk on top of it, and this worked, but it is difficult to see anything in the pictures with so much fabric in the way. I then made a few adjustments, took in a little at the top of the "cup" for the breast, making it more cupped than the original flared shape, took in a piece of the side front at the hips, and basically that is it. The pattern needed very little alteration apart from adding about 8 cm total to the hips.

The only (minor) problem I found in this pattern is that the waist is not marked. I tried to find the waist on the mock up by pulling on both sides of a half until I found the smallest part, and then marking a straight line with a ruler. I transfered this to the final pattern, and then I found out it approximates a lot to the 90° from the grainline:

At the line I marked as waist the pattern measures exactly 30cm (60 total) which is exactly what the pattern states as waist measurement, so I must not be so off :)

I pinned, marked (with hard, sharp pencil) and cut the pieces on the coutil:

I've always been a disaster when it comes to finding the grain. This fabric is dense, stiff, nice to work with. I paid a lot of attention to the grain (that the herringbone weave has these little stripes helps a lot, actually) so I hope this time I got it right.

I chose to cut the back panels double, folded at the edge. I figure the fabric folded is stronger than any seam can be. The grommets would have less fabric to grasp this way, so I think I'll add a strip of fabric in between.
This is a one layer corset (I am following the instructions on the pattern as much as possible) with the exception of the front and back panels, for obvious reasons... if not so obvious: busk, grommets and bones besides them must be inserted between two layers of fabric. The rest of the boning is inserted in external bone channels.

Here are the layers marked and in order, waiting for the tea dye. I didn't dye the fabric before cutting since the smaller pieces will be easier to handle (and dye in the sink) The sink is in use now (geez, I'm so hungry! it smells so nice!) but I hope to dye them today so I can continue tomorrow.

Btw, the busk rust-tests have turned out fine :) I have soaked and let it air dry twice now and there are no signs of rust. I think I will soak it a third time.

1877 corset II

Yes, I finally caved in and ordered the supplies ;P

Today I took a piece of coutil and inserted the busk. I wanted to do this for two reasons, first, practice, I've never inserted a spoon busk, which looks tricky because it is curved in both dimensions, and I've never used a zipper foot before, my previous machine didn't have one, and I am so glad this machine has one, since it helps, a lot. You can get very close to the edge :)

I forgot to take a pic as I was stitching but you get the idea

I just folded the fabric and put the busk there, I made slits for the eyes and holes (trying not to break fibres) for the studs.

I basted a bit around them and stitched:

The fabric is a bit creased from washing (for pre-shrinking) I should have washed it by hand instead of in the machine, live and learn.

Here I fucked up a bit: I didn't push the busk flat for a moment and this happened.

Second reason: rust tests. I want to be able to wash this corset, and I am unsure about the spoon busk. So...

...into the water it goes.

It is now drying, togheter with the lace and insertion silk ribbon that I also washed to pre-shrink/avoid bleeding (I added some vinegar to the silk ribbon). And some dye tests. You can also see my METAL top drying in the background *g*

Dyeing samples with tea, a mix of tea and coffee, and coffee:

Because if possible, I would like to dye the coutil an ivory tone. I was gonna dye the lace a little too, a softer shade, but I might let it white.

Sewing machine rantity rant

Sunday night when we arrived I checked the machine a bit, not much because it was pretty late. The belt was obviously too long, and the bobbin pin is definitely missing. Yesterday morning I shortened the leather belt (it is very old and a bit fragile but seems to hold well), cleaned (it wasn't too dirty) all the lint I could see and oiled all the moving parts, treadle too, well (I used bike oil which I hope is ok). After that it worked pretty well, without changing the needle (the one that was there, since who knows when) with just a bit of puckering to the stitches. It might have been the needle, or the thread I used, or some tension problem. The machine is in very good condition and I think it has been used and oiled relatively recently.

Today I adjusted the tension and changed the needle, after this the stitch is almost perfect. I went to the Singer shop this morning, with the booklet, and they advised against buying the regular needles since they didn't think they would fit into such an old machine, and just asked me to bring the machine (unlike the new plastic machines, this one weighs a ton) They didn't have a replacement bobbin pin either and didn't know where to find one.
What I did is to come back with the needles that came into the attachment box, and lo, they are the same than regular needles... The needles I already have are 80, and seem in perfect condition, so I bought some 90 for wovens and a mixed pack 90 & 100 for jeans, which I bought for coutil, but maybe it is overkill, I'll see. I also got "proper" machine oil... and the bottle has a picture of a bike, a car and a gun too... I would bet all these oils are just the same, but better safe than sorry.

I googled around and found an english pdf of the manual, which is nice since the Dutch of my manual is pretty old and my Dutch is not so amazing.
I also found this treadle community online: http://www.treadleon.net/ which is nice since it is focused in using the machines. In this page I found this excellent advice about thread tension. Really good, I recommend the read to anyone who sews.
I read it and helped me a lot adjusting the tension, upper and, carefully, the lower too, which was way too tight, but I think now I have to tighten it a little bit more. Even so, the machine stitches beautifully :) which is fortunate, since my other machine has suddenly decied to stop working o_O maybe envy?
I am also starting to get used to the treadle, which is a bit tricky.

I've been too busy with the tuning of the machine that I haven't taken any pictures yet (!) I'll see if I can take some tomorrow.

Singer 301

Today it's been busy... apart from a lot of family visits, we went to pick up the sewing machine I won on Ebay yesterday.
The machine, now I can confirm it is a 15-88 model, seems in very nice condition, I haven't had time to look at it more than 2 minutes since we had to bring it home (helping Pim carry it upstairs with my damaged back: ouchie) and leave. It is a straight-stitch treadle without motor and a short shank, which reportedly can sew very thick materials, the cabinet has a lousy varnish job and a few bug holes (which seem inactive) but is otherwise nice and in good condition. The machine is misteriously missing the two sticks to place the thread spool, which I find very weird... maybe they retract to fold the machine down? it still has the original manual (in ancient Dutch, heh), the original bill from 1953 (it costed about 8000 francs, which is about 200 euro, which was a lot of money back then) several bobbins, and a lot of attachments :D it has a ruffler foot (yay!), a hemmer, a wider-hem hemmer, a zipper foot, a binder foot, a darning foot, and some other stuff I don't know what it is or I've forgotten. Two or three of these feet already cost what I've paid for the entire machine...

I was eyeing two machines this weekend, I placed both on my auction sniper (sue me). Since this one went for so cheap (only 1 euro more than starting price) I didn't take the other out from the sniper. It started at 7.5 euro and I put a maximum of 25... it went for 21.55 which is also a steal, and yeah I won that one too :D It is (I think) a 301 model, and I've been googling around and a lot of people rave about it. It is electric, slanted shank, and is placed in a portable wooden case. According to the seller it makes 6 different stitches and has a few feet, and the manual.

What can I say, but yay, YAY!

I still have to contact the seller who lives an hour away southways from us, I guess the pick-up will have to wait until next weekend.

I guess I'll be posting a lot about the machines in the next days... I'm so excited about them!

I just won this for €26 (!) on Ebay:

And tomorrow we pick it up. There was only this picture on the auction, it seems to be in very good condition and to have manual and at least a few attachments. I do hope it works but it will probably need some adjustments. Luckly I have a Singer dealer at 5 minutes walking distance from home.

I believe it is a <s>15-91</s> 15-88 / 15-89 / 15-90, just from this picture though, so I cannot be sure.

Now I'm off to have a drink...
